Finding the Right Mentor

A mentor in business is an investment. Someone to provide you with an unbiased, outside look into the steps you should be taking to grow.

Studies have shown that businesses who have been mentored live past their first five years- double the amount of non-mentored businesses.

Eighty-eight percent of businesses in that same study called the mentoring experience ‘invaluable’ to their business success. However, in saying this, it is important to choose the right kind of mentor for you and your business.

Just as no two businesses are the same, no two mentors have the same expertise and while friends, family and colleague might seem like a great mentors. They will not be able to emphasize with you- like a mentor in your industry can.

So, here are three types of mentors you should consider:

 Mentor from Afar

The first type of mentor rarely comes with monetary costs- you probably have several of these without even realizing it. A ‘mentor from a far’ is someone who doesn’t know you, but who can still have a great impact on running your business.

Engage with this kind of mentor by consuming free content (blogs, video training webinars, e-books, audio clips, etc) from leaders or businesses that you admire or speakers that inspire you.

Don’t discount any type of distance membership just because it doesn’t involve one-on-one time

  1.  Industry Specific Mentor

This type of mentor has already worked in your shoes; he or she knows your frustrations and can help you with industry dependent challenges, such as choosing suppliers or finance processes.

While industry specific mentors may not mentor full time, the one-on-one advice will prove to be invaluable.

  1. The Direct Mentor

Direct mentors are professionals in which you pay in return for their advice, guidance and support. They guide you in making desired impacts in your business and life on your own terms. They can help you manage your time, reframe problems into opportunities, overcome self-imposed limitations and much, much more.

A direct mentor is someone on your side, looking out for you and your business full time.

Choose your mentors wisely; make sure you feel comfortable enough with them to confide your fears and unconventional ideas. A great mentor will help you own your vision and accomplish your greatest dreams.
